Growing from the Family Tree.

These are my great-grandparents. My great-grandfather Robert Marshall was a farmer florist before it was cool. Or more accurately, the first time it was cool. In the 1930’s. He started out as a gardener which led to him being given a loan by the DuPont family to buy greenhouses in Delaware and become a grower. He grew flowers for the rest of his career and after he retired was known to help in the florist shop of a friend. Family lore holds that he was responsible for the fresh floral arrangement at the Nemours Estate every day.

I’ve always loved this picture of them. I don’t know if there is anything to something being “in your blood” but sometimes, turning the family back to flowers, it feels like it. I only recently noticed the Dahlias stuck in my great grandmother’s dress. I wish I knew what variety they were, but how cool are they?
