Field Notes 8th-12th: Why I Love Doing it the Hard Way

I haven’t been able to stop and post much because we’ve been doing ALL the things. Dahlia planting is finally completed; we’re caught up on plugs and direct seeding too. Buckets and buckets of flowers are being harvested every other day. I’m also putting on my florist hat just about every day too-deep into wedding season there’s always a centerpiece or boutonniere to make. I get the great priviledge of ordering from my fellow growers to make these designs. I’ve tried to grow cherry caramel phlox for years and always fail-but Elise at Two Boots Farm grows it fabulously! Hillen Homestead has always grown my favorite shade of Delphinium and you can never have too much! Our commitment to 100% Maryland grown floristry is not the easiest choice by a long shot, but I do think it’s the most rewarding. These flowers come straight to me from the farms where they were grown same day (we hand off on our usual delivery routes) in fresh water. No single use plastic, no need to dunk them in pesticides to get them through customs, and no air miles. The stuff we DON’T get is the best. I DO get to use the most delicate, interesting stuff and support super cool women. Wins all around!

Have a Great Weekend!
