Field Notes June 29-July 2: Caring for the Babies

This week was a mad rush to plant out the next succession for the fall before the heat dome really settled in. Planting and watering, watering and planting. Being in the weather every day I’m constantly thinking about it. Mainly I think about who is impacted first/the most by climate upheavals-my mailman, the construction workers on the way to the farm, my kids and potential grandkids. I remind myself that I believe in people and their ability to solve problems and work together. It’s also the 250th here in our nation’s capitol and that’s feeling as baroque as the heat is intense. I guess what I’m hoping for this fourth of July is to have a really fun weekend and also be able to see myself in the fabric of this country and world in a way that can make it just a little bit better. Not everyone signs the Declaration of Independence. Some people do the laundry so that the guy has something to wear to the signing. Or recommends a great book over pints that gets the ideas flowing. My offering feels really small sometimes. Hope the flowers bring people together. Grow them in the most sustainable way I know how. Do my best at loving my kids, family and friends.

And do you know what? The plant babies are doing better than expected so far. All that watering helped. I think we are going to have a gorgeous fall.
