Field Notes: April 5th-11th
As I’ve started sharing farm updates over on Instagram, it occurred to me that it might be nice to drop them here too. We’ll see how it goes!
It happens every year if we are being honest, around the first week of April, temperatures suddenly soar and flowers start popping open left and right. We spend a week of intense and hurried harvest, and then it gets cool again (frost watch tonight!)
This year’s hustle also included a lot of transportation. As our CSA members already know, there is a spot of construction going on at the property this spring and it brings with it surprises, as I believe all renovations must. Groundbreaking meant the loss of power to our cooler for the weekend and everything we harvested had to find an alternative home, which meant that I had the lovely excuse to drive over to M and M Plants a couple times to chat with my friend Madgie about life while she generously made room in her cooler for us. I came into farming really wanting to be a lone wolf. One of the lessons farming teaches you over and over again is you cannot do it alone AND life is a LOT more fun with other people. We are built to be together and rely on each other. Add to that Tom and Melane pitching in to move tulips and kind Electricians who worked out solutions and got us back up and running quickly! Planting, harvesting, watering, delivering to Each Peach Market and adding flowers to the online shop-it appears that the season has officially begun!
